4.30.2010, MGM in Las Vegas: Floyd Mayweather was 147, Mosley was 146. The crowd, having lined up as early as 10 a.m., favored (slightly) Mosley. No shoving, a standard staredown and nothing out of the ordinary between the camps or fighters.  The man of the hour was ring announcer Michael Buffer, who carried host, “comedian” George Wallace through the event.

leonard, hearns on mayweather, mosley

Former boxing greats “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Thomas “Hitman” Hearns pose for a shot after talking to the media today about Mayweather-Mosley, in the MGM’s press room in Las Vegas. Both, Leonard and Hearns lean toward Mayweather for the victory. They also agreed that though tomorrow night’s megafight may be a scorcher, the drama would probably not exceed their own battles in the ring.

weigh-in outtakes

4.29.10, Tropicana Casino, Las Vegas: What can be so hard about shooting a bunch of starved boxers in their underwear? Try red lighting. I’ve been in Juarez strip clubs with friendlier lighting. Or the occasional doofus who creeps across your range while you’re shooting. Today’s weigh-in at the Tropicana was far from a disaster, with plenty of do-able shots, but the shot above best encompasses the bar-packed event.

big drama from ‘big poppa’

Boxing

4.29.10: The man on the right is none other than unheralded Tommie “Big Poppa” Speller, a 5-3 fighter our of the fighting town of Philly who takes on undefeated Dion Savage (7-0, 5 KOs), of Flint, Mich. on Saturday night’s Mayweather-Mosley undercard. Why should we care? After a somewhat slow, standard press conference, held today in the media center at the MGM, “Big Poppa” took over the mic. Somewhat irritated that he’d been ignored for the last 45 minutes, Speller, spewing f-bombs in front of the kid on his lap, made it clear he was coming to spoil Savage’s day. By the way, Speller IS coming off a win … after three straight defeats.

“who r u picking?”

cozzone / las vegas / / 0 Comments

4.29.2010: Unless you were talking about barbs sent back and forth from Floyd Mayweather, Sr. and Cassius Green (a.k.a. “Captain Crunch”), there was no trash talking at the final press conference for “Who R U Picking?”, today at the MGM in Las Vegas. R-E-S-P-E-C-T was the word of the day as, both, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and “Sugar” Shane Mosley praised one another, and promised an historic fight on Saturday.

mayweather, mosley arrive in vegas

cozzone / las vegas / / 0 Comments

4.27.2010 A big crowd (but not quite a Pacquiao crowd) at the MGM in Vegas greets Floyd “Money” Mayweather and “Sugar” Shane Mosley. Arriving on time -a rarity – Mayweather breaks record for slowest ring entrance, taking time to sign autographs for nearly every fan waving a photo, souvenir fight program or double-sided cardboard heads of Mosley-Mayweather.

Wishlist for 2010: That the MGM dumps the lion for a new mascot. Why not a wombat, spider monkey or a pterodactyl? Either that, or boxers posing next to said lion are no longer the staple for fighters’ grand arrivals.

melligen stew

cozzone / fight coverage, las vegas / / 0 Comments

Mexican welterweight champ Norberto “Demonio” Gonzalez had promised to exact vengeance for the many losses Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao had wreaked upon his fellow countrymen. But last night at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, Gonzalez was forced to eat, both, his words, and an unhealthy serving of “Melligen stew.” . . . |more|

The challenges, staredowns, and media turnout might’ve been less than hoped for, at today’s Top Rank press conference, held at the Hard Rock Hotel’s The Joint in Las Vegas, but undefeated Las Vegas jr. lightweight Diego Magdaleno summed up the bigger challenge for the show he’ll be co-headlining when he took his turn at the podium: “The sparks are gonna be here, at the Joint – not at the Thomas & Mack Center.” . . . |more|

Cuban refugee and former amateur star Erislandy Lara might’ve shown the world he’s got the goods to crack into contention at junior middleweight, with his safe-but-sound, one-sided win over Danny Perez, last night at the Hard Rock’s The Joint in Las Vegas, but, in doing so, he lulled a shallow crowd into a deep sleep . . . |more|
