Alvarado upsets Rios in rematch

War can be so ugly, it’s beautiful.

Ask any boxing fan who watched last night’s epic, and, for once, you won’t hear about snoozefests or robberies, politics or the UFC. You’ll hear about blood and guts warfare and the names of two youngsters who just may keep the sport going once the obvious elders have called it a day.

You’ll also hear satisfaction.

Bypassing both last year’s original epic and the recent Bradley-Provodnikov war, Saturday night’s rematch between Mike “Mile High” Alvarado and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios was a classic battle that will leave fight fans remembering 2013 as the year they began mumbling, “Manny who? ‘Money’what?” . . . More

Rios unable to make weight for title fight with Richard Abril: There were no staredowns, no shoving, no smack talk at yesterday’s weigh-in. The drama – or mystery – centered on the scale, when Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios came in two pounds heavy, at 137. One hour later, after an attempt to sweat out two pounds, Rios re-weighed, only to come in two pounds heavier.

acosta, rios work out in vegas

Alright, so when a promoter calls the media in to watch a “workout,” it doesn’t mean a fighter is actually going to work out. In fact, you’ll be lucky to get someone shadowbox a round. And that’s exactly what Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios did today. In his schoolboy sweater, he obliged the press to shadowbox a measly round, then spent the remaining time, goofing off.

That is, until Miguel Acosta showed up. Once someone made the suggestion to pose the two together, Rios was splitsville.

Acosta, on the hand, cranked up the South American beats and shadowboxed half a dozen rounds, giving the media at least a clue on how his movement is going to mystify Rios on Saturday.

Undercard fighters Mike Lee and Jesse Magdaleno also gave the media plenty of photo ops. Lee shadowboxed and Magdaleno was the only fighter of the day who dared hit the mitts.

The bonus of the day was newly-crowned bantam king Nonito Donaire, who showed up to goof off with stablemate Rios, and talk about his knockout of Fernando Montiel last weekend on the Top Rank bill at Mandalay Bay. “I still don’t know he was able to get up,” Donaire said of Montiel.

Gamboa wins fight, loses at presser: Could be, there’s a reason why Cuban sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa is so dour-faced.

Upon arriving at last night’s post-fight press conference, following his hard-fought-but-still-impressive title unification victory over Orlando Salido, 34-11-2, 22 KOs, the undefeated Gamboa, 19-0, 15 KOs, now holder of two featherweight titles (not quite half of the four top ABCs, Chris John being a WBA “superchamp” or “ultra-silver” or whatever they are calling their top belt-holders these days), arrived at the presser where he had to share the spotlight with rivals Miguel Angel Garcia and Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez. . . |more|

“Bam Bam” gets “border pass” – Rios star of show at postfight presser: Cuban sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa might’ve been the headliner on the card, but the real star of, both, the fight card and the post-fight press conference, was Brandon Rios.

Living up to his nickname, “Bam Bam” Rios, 25-0-1, 17 KOs, blasted through the guard of Peterson, 30-1, 20 KOs, flooring his formerly undefeated opponent in the fifth, en route to a win by disqualification in round seven. Rios was ahead on the cards, 68-62 trice, when Referee Russell Mora stopped the fight due to excessive low blows thrown by Peterson . . . |more|
